The court to which the guardian of the estate of a minor is accountable, may direct the amount he may expend for or toward the support and education of his ward out of the income of his estate, real and personal, and if the income is insufficient and he has no other proper means of support and education, then out of the principal of his personal estate and the proceeds received on the sale of his real estate. No directions shall be made for expenditures out of such principal and proceeds for more than 1 year after the making of the directions.
In giving such directions with respect to income or principal the court shall have special reference to the amount of the estate and the condition in life of the ward, and to the pecuniary means of any parent or other person who is under legal obligation with respect to the education and support of the ward.
If during the period in which such directions are in force, the ward is adequately supported and educated, the court shall allow the guardian in the settlement of his account the amount expended not exceeding the sum fixed by the court.
