Rhode Island General Laws Title 14. Delinquent and Dependent Children § 14-1-20. Release or placement of child in custody of officer

Whenever any officer takes a child into custody, he or she shall, unless it is impracticable or has been otherwise ordered by the court, accept the written promise of the parent, guardian, or other custodian of the child to bring the child to the court at the time fixed. Upon that promise the child may be released in the custody of a parent, guardian, or other custodian. If not so released, the child shall be placed in the custody of a probation counselor or other person designated by the court, or shall be immediately taken to the court or other place of detention designated by the court, and the officer taking him or her shall immediately notify the court and shall file a petition when directed to do so by the court.
