Unless the owner of the water system within a building containing multiple occupancy units otherwise requests in writing, a public utility shall provide water to the building through a single connection, in which case the utility may require, where water meters are otherwise permitted by law, that there be a single water meter or meter facility, but it shall not require a separate meter facility for each unit therein.
