If any person shall be convicted of larceny or theft, he shall be fined in a sum not exceeding one thousand dollars, or imprisonment, at hard labor, not exceeding two years, and any person convicted of stealing any horse, mare, gelding, mule, ass, sheep, hog or goat, shall be sentenced to not more than seven, nor less than two years imprisonment at hard labor, or to receive not more than one hundred nor less than twenty stripes well laid on his bare back.
