The board and the agency, through the governor, may enter into an agreement with the nuclear regulatory commission, as provided in the Atomic Energy Act of 1954, 1 as amended, providing for discontinuance of the regulatory authority of the nuclear regulatory commission and acceptance of that authority by the board and agency. For the duration of such an agreement, the board shall have authority to regulate the radioactive materials covered by the agreement for the protection of the public health and safety and the environment from radiation hazards.
