a. For sewerage and water corporations, on or before May 1, 1971, except as hereinafter provided, and on or before May 1 of each year thereafter, every person, copartnership, association or corporation subject to the excise tax imposed by section 6 of P.L.1940, c. 5 (C.54:30A-54) shall pay to the director an amount equal to 1/2 of the tax payable under section 6 of P.L.1940, c. 5 (C.54:30A-54) upon its gross receipts determined thereunder for the preceding calendar year. Each such payment shall be in addition to the tax payable under section 6 of P.L.1940, c. 5 (C.54:30A-54) and shall be considered as a partial payment of the tax which will become due under said section upon the following May 1 . The additional taxes due on or before May 1, 1971 shall be payable in two equal installments. With respect to the additional taxes herein, the first installment shall be payable on May 1, 1971 and the second installment thereof shall be payable on or before June 15, 1971.
In the calculation of the tax due in accordance with section 6 of P.L.1940, c. 5 (C.54:30A-54) in the year 1972 and each applicable year thereafter, every person, copartnership, association or corporation subject to tax hereunder shall be entitled to a credit in the amount of the tax paid hereunder as a partial payment in the preceding calendar year and shall be entitled to the return, or credit against taxes due and payable in the next year, of any amount so paid which shall be found to be in excess of the total amount payable in accordance with section 6 of P.L.1940, c. 5 (C.54:30A-54).
