Upon inquiry as provided in section 44:1-87 of this title the overseer 1 shall by a written order render such aid and material relief as he may in his discretion deem necessary to the end that the person may not suffer unnecessarily from cold or hunger, or be deprived of shelter. If the poor person requires permanent relief and support and is without adequate home, he shall, subject to various other provisions of this chapter, be committed and removed to the proper almshouse or welfare-house in the municipality, county or district.
