The governing body or bodies may appoint such other assistants, clerks, visitors and nurses as in their judgment may be expedient, and fix their salaries and that of the deputy overseer, 1 which salaries shall be in lieu of all fees. The deputy overseer and the assistants, clerks and nurses shall work under the direction of the overseer, shall hold their office or employment during good behavior, and may be removed by the governing body upon written charges and after a hearing upon due notice for misconduct, neglect or incompetence.
