The earnings of the prisoner must be collected by the sheriff. From those earnings, the sheriff shall pay the prisoner's board and personal expenses both inside and outside the jail and, to the extent directed by the court, pay the support of the prisoner's dependents, if any. Any balance must be retained until the prisoner's discharge.
