Subdivision 1. Participation. A volunteer firefighter, as defined insection 353.01, subdivision 36, who, on June 30, 1989, was a member of, and a participant in, the general employees retirement fund or the public employees police and fire fund and was making contributions to either of those funds based, at least in part, on compensation for services performed as a volunteer firefighter shall continue as a member of, and a participant in, the general employees retirement fund or the public employees police and fire fund and compensation for services performed as a volunteer firefighter must be considered salary.
