No insurer licensed to write and engaged in the writing of homeowners insurance in this commonwealth nor the joint underwriting association, formed pursuant to the provisions of chapter one hundred and seventy-five C, shall take into consideration when deciding whether to provide, renew, or cancel homeowners insurance the race, color, religious creed, national origin, sex, age, ancestry, sexual orientation, children, marital status, veteran status, the receipt of public assistance or disability of the applicant or insured. Nothing herein shall preempt any existing remedy provided by law for any action that constitutes a violation of this section.
