Massachusetts General Laws Part I. Administration of the Government (Ch. 1-182) Ch. 147, § 11

Any city in which the city council, with the approval of the mayor, accepts this and the two following sections or has accepted corresponding provisions of earlier laws, may establish a reserve police force;  and appointments thereto shall, subject to chapter thirty-one, be made in the same manner as appointments to the regular police force of said city.
