Massachusetts General Laws Part I. Administration of the Government (Ch. 1-182) Ch. 127, § 28

The superintendents of the correctional institutions of the commonwealth and the keepers of jails and houses of correction shall keep a record of the descriptions and fingerprints taken under section twenty-three and of the criminal history of prisoners so described and fingerprinted, as shown by the records of the courts of the commonwealth, or of any other state, or by any other official records which are accessible, and shall attach to the record a photograph of such prisoner or file such photograph in such manner as to be readily found. Systems operated by the department of criminal justice information services, pursuant to sections one hundred and sixty-six through one hundred and seventy-seven, inclusive, of chapter six,  1 may be used for such recordkeeping purposes provided that such records remain subject to the regulations of said board.
