Whoever counterfeits or forges a license, or a certificate of registration issued pursuant to section thirty-four, or has a counterfeited or forged license or certificate in his possession with intent to utter or use the same as true, knowing it to be false or counterfeit, or attempts to sell under a license or certificate which has expired or has been revoked or cancelled, or which has not been issued or transferred to him, or has in his possession another's license or certificate with intent to use the same, shall be punished by a fine of not more than five hundred dollars or by imprisonment for not more than six months, or both such fine and imprisonment.
