A volunteer firefighter entitled to benefits under the workers compensation act who is engaged by the state of Kansas under the compact pursuant to K.S.A. 31-801, and amendments thereto, shall be deemed to be an employee of the state of Kansas solely for purposes of the workers compensation act.
