The chief administrative officer of the department is the director who shall be appointed by the governor, subject to confirmation of the senate, and serve at the governor's pleasure. The governor shall make the appointment based on the appointee's training, experience, and capabilities. The director shall be knowledgeable in the general field of natural resource management and environmental protection. The salary of the director shall be fixed by the governor.
