(a) In this section, “electric vehicle” means a motor vehicle that has a gross weight of 10,000 pounds or less and uses electricity as its only source of motor power. The term does not include:
(1) an autocycle, as defined by Section 501.008;
(2) a moped, as defined by Section 541.201;
(3) a motorcycle, as defined by Sections 521.001 and 541.201; or
(4) a neighborhood electric vehicle, as defined by Section 551.301.
(b) In addition to other fees authorized under this chapter, at the time of application for registration or renewal of registration of an electric vehicle, the applicant shall pay an additional fee of:
(1) $400, for the registration of a new vehicle to which Section 548.102 applies; or
(2) $200, for the registration or renewal of registration of a vehicle to which Section 548.101 applies.
(c) Fees collected under this section must be deposited to the credit of the state highway fund.
(d) The department may adopt rules to administer this section.
