Within the department of corrections there shall be a classification unit under the supervision of the director, or the director’s designee, which shall collect and record all of the data concerning each person sentenced to the adult correctional institutions. This unit shall periodically review the file of each person and shall report to the board its findings and recommendations for those persons who shall have been sentenced to imprisonment for more than one year for such action as the board may deem necessary and appropriate. The classification unit shall furnish to the parole board, for its consideration in every case, the file of each person under consideration for parole.
