The assistants to the Pennsylvania State Police, not receiving a salary for the performance of public duties, shall receive, upon the audit of the Pennsylvania State Police, fifty cents for each report of each separate fire reported to the Pennsylvania State Police under this act, and, in addition thereto, shall be paid the sum of fifteen cents for each mile traveled to the place of fire and, in the discretion of the Pennsylvania State Police, where an investigation has been made, a sum not to exceed three dollars ($3.00) for each day's service spent in such investigation.
