A board of examiners, whose duty it shall be to examine all applicants for places upon any of the eligible lists required by this act, 1 from which appointments to serve under the board of public education are made, may be constituted by the board. The superintendent of schools shall nominate to the board of public education for appointment such number of persons for the board of examiners as the board of public education may authorize. The superintendent of schools shall act as chairman of the board of examiners. He shall prescribe such examination as, upon his recommendation, the board of public education may approve, or as its rules may direct.
