Pennsylvania Statutes Title 16 P.S. Counties § 7586. Deputy sheriffs, etc., in Philadelphia, extorting illegal fees, to be removed

If any deputy sheriff, bailiff, jailor, or other officer employed by the high sheriff of the County of Philadelphia, shall take, demand or receive any fee or charge, other or greater than that which is now allowed by law, it shall be the duty of the court of common pleas of said county, on complaint being made, to grant a rule on the said sheriff, returnable within ten days, to show cause why said deputy, bailiff, jailor or other officer should not be forthwith dismissed from office; and if on return of the said rule, due notice be given to all parties interested, there be a default to appear and show cause, and the fact be shown to the satisfaction of the said court, it shall be the duty of the said court to make the same absolute and enforce obedience thereto by attachment: Provided, That nothing herein contained shall be construed to repeal any existing remedies or penalties for taking illegal fees: And Provided, That it shall not be lawful for the sheriff during his term of service to reappoint any officer so as aforesaid dismissed.
