Whenever a planning commission, board, or officer certifies to the legislative authority of a municipal corporation any plan for the districting or zoning of the municipal corporation according to the height of buildings and other structures, such legislative authority may, in the interest of the promotion of the public health, safety, convenience, comfort, prosperity, or general welfare, regulate and limit the height of buildings and other structures thereafter erected or altered and for such purpose may divide the municipal corporation into districts of such number, shape, and area as are best suited to carry out the purposes of this section.
