The department of transportation with respect to any bridge structure that crosses a waterway which is part of the barge canal system may by order, rule or regulation, regulate traffic on the approaches thereto by means of traffic control devices, physical barriers and traffic control signals for a distance not exceeding one hundred fifty feet from such bridge structure.
