The town board in a town in which a town fire district has been established pursuant to the provisions of chapter two hundred and twenty-six of the laws of nineteen hundred sixteen may authorize the expenditure of surplus moneys of the town for the purchase of apparatus for the extinguishment and the prevention of fires in such town fire district.
