1. The commissioner, in collaboration with the commissioner of education, within amounts available pursuant to subdivision nineteen-a of section twenty-eight hundred seven-c and section twenty-eight hundred seven-l of this chapter, is authorized to make grants to encourage minority participation in medicine.
2. Grants shall be awarded through a request for application process for the following purposes:
to medical schools located in New York state or primary care medical training programs to encourage minority participation in medical education, which may include programs to enhance minority recruitment and retention, minority student mentoring programs, development of medical career pathways for minority students, and development of minority faculty role models.
3. The intent of this program is to augment or increase minority participation in medical education. Grants funding shall not be used to offset existing expenditures which the grantee has obligated for minority participation in medical education.
