The general assembly hereby recognizes and commends the designation by the congress of the United States of the Santa Fe trail as a national historic trail and declares that portion of the Santa Fe trail occurring in the state of Colorado to be a valuable and noteworthy historic resource that should be identified for the traveling public where it travels on or crosses the highways of the state of Colorado. Therefore, the executive director of the department of transportation is directed to mark with suitable signs significant route segments and sites recognized as associated with the primary route of the historic Santa Fe trail in Colorado, as generally depicted on a map entitled “The Santa Fe Trail” contained in the final report of the secretary of the interior of the United States dated July 1976, where the trail travels on and crosses the highways of this state. The cost of implementing the purposes of this section shall be derived from any gifts, donations, or in-kind contributions to the department of transportation for this purpose.
