Every state-paid judge or justice of the unified court system who is assigned from the court to which he or she was elected or appointed to another court or who is assigned to perform judicial duties at a location outside the county of his or her residence or, in the case of a judge or justice residing in the city of New York, outside such city, shall, during the time of such assignment, receive either the compensation to which he or she is entitled in the court to which he or she was elected or appointed, or the compensation received by a judge or justice in the court or location to which he or she is assigned, whichever is higher.
