The board of supervisors may, in its discretion, audit and pay the reasonable medical and hospital expenses of any police officer or peace officer of the county injured in the line of duty while executing a criminal process for which the county is liable for payment of the fees and for which he is not compensated under the provisions of the workers' compensation law. The claim shall be presented within one year from the date of the injury and shall be itemized and verified or certified.
