Whenever hospital care is furnished to a person on account of an injury suffered by the person in a motor vehicle crash, the hospital shall use reasonable diligence to collect the amount of the charges for that care from the patient or any other person responsible for the support of the patient. The hospital may request the board of county commissioners of the county in which:
1. The crash occurred, if the person is not a resident of this state and the crash occurred in this state; or
2. The person resides, if the person is a resident of this state,
to determine whether the person who received the care is an indigent person.
