The Director may, in consultation with the Secretary of Transportation, provide within the right-of-way of the interstate highway system for areas at appropriate distances from interchanges at which signs, displays and devices giving specific information in the interest of the traveling public may be erected and maintained. Such signs must conform to national standards prescribed by the Secretary of Transportation.
