All payments of compensation to volunteer firemen, county fire marshals, assistant county fire marshals, volunteer first aid or rescue squad workers, volunteer drivers of any municipally-owned or operated ambulance, special, reserve or auxiliary policemen doing volunteer public police duty under the control or supervision of any commission, council or any other governing body of any municipality, or emergency management volunteers doing emergency management service, shall be governed by and be subject to the provisions of this chapter. The premiums therefor shall be paid from the tax levy, and the insurance shall protect such persons from loss by reason of injury or death suffered while engaged in the performance of duty.
