Notwithstanding the provisions of any law, rule or regulation to the contrary, a pupil who is disabled and who is placed by the parents or guardians at their own expense in a nonpublic school for treatment of the disability shall be eligible to participate in the interscholastic athletic program of the student's resident school district, provided the student otherwise meets the eligibility requirements of the program and the student's participation has the written approval of the board of education of the school district where the program is located.
