North Carolina General Statutes Chapter 7A. Judicial Department § 7A-39.1. Justice, emergency justice, judge and emergency judge defined

(a) As herein used “justice of the Supreme Court” includes the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and “judge of the Court of Appeals” includes the Chief Judge of the Court of Appeals, unless the context clearly indicates a contrary intent.

(b) As used herein, “emergency justice”, “emergency judge”, or “emergency recall judge” means any justice of the Supreme Court or any judge of the Court of Appeals, respectively, who has retired subject to recall for temporary service.
