(1) An innkeeper is liable for all losses of or injuries to personal property placed by the guests under the innkeeper's care unless occasioned by an irresistible superhuman cause, by a public enemy, by the negligence of the owner, or by the act of someone whom the innkeeper brought into the inn.
(2) The liability provided for in subsection (1) may not exceed $500 for all personal property of each registered guest unless the innkeeper consents in writing with the guest to assume a greater liability. An innkeeper whose liability is limited shall notify the guest at the time of registration, in writing, that this limitation applies.
