The commission shall, by majority vote of all its members, appoint a municipal superintendent of schools to serve without definite term but subject to removal at the pleasure of the commission. The superintendent of schools for any district within the municipality may, with the consent of the trustees of that district, be appointed to serve as municipal superintendent. The compensation of the municipal superintendent must be fixed by the commission, and the superintendent has the powers and shall perform the duties prescribed for county superintendents of schools by the laws of the state.
