(1) A member of the legislature may not, during the term for which the member was elected, be appointed to any civil office under the state. A member of the legislature may become a candidate for public office during the legislator's term.
(2) A member of the legislature who is elected to another public office shall resign from the legislature prior to assuming the office to which the member is newly elected.
