There is a state archives in the Montana historical society for the preservation of noncurrent records of permanent value to the state and local governments and for records management. The director of the Montana historical society shall appoint a state archivist, who serves at the pleasure of the director, define the archivist's duties, and fix the archivist's compensation with the approval of the board of trustees of the Montana historical society.
