The census supervisor and enumerators provided for in the preceding sections shall receive such compensation as may be designated by the governor for their services; provided, that the compensation of the supervisor shall not exceed seven dollars and fifty cents for each day actually spent in the performance of his duties as such supervisor, and the compensation of the enumerators shall not exceed five dollars each for each day actually spent in the performance of their duties as enumerators. The compensation of the supervisor and enumerators and all other expenses of such census shall be paid by the city in which such census is taken.
