The office of administration may reimburse counties, out of funds appropriated by the general assembly, for expenses related to the prosecution of crimes occurring within institutions under the supervision and management of the department of corrections. Such expenses shall not exceed fifty percent of expenses. The amount of reimbursement may be based on the number of cases referred for prosecution, the number of cases filed or the number of cases tried.
