A. Municipalities may, by ordinance of the governing authority, adopt a plan for holding municipal elections at the congressional elections in accordance with R.S. 18:402. Any plan so adopted shall be filed with the secretary of state no later than January 1 of the year in which the plan is to take effect. No such plan shall be revocable by the governing authority. Any municipality that complies with the provisions of this Section may hold municipal elections at the congressional elections in accordance with R.S. 18:402. The officers elected shall take office on the first day of January following their election and shall hold their office for four years.
B. No plan shall be adopted pursuant to this Section if such plan would result in extending the term of office of a municipal official unless such plan was adopted at least thirty days prior to the primary election for the term to be extended.
