The board of education of any school district in which a charter school is being operated shall provide transportation to and from the school for pupils who qualify for free meals under the national school lunch act and who live 2 1/2 or more miles from the school. Nothing in this section shall operate in any manner to prevent a board of education from providing transportation to and from a charter school for all pupils attending the school.
