§ 11-80-23. The corporate authorities of each municipality may employ and fix the compensation of persons to serve as school crossing guards, on a part-time basis, by directing traffic and protecting children crossing the streets in going to and from school. The corporate authorities of any municipality may pay such compensation from general corporate funds or may levy, annually, in municipalities having a population of less than 500,000 a special tax for that purpose of not to exceed .02% of the value, as equalized or assessed by the Department of Revenue, of all taxable property in that municipality. Such a tax is in addition to the amount authorized to be levied for general purposes by Section 8-3-1.
