§ 3-820. Duplicate Number Plates.
(a) Upon filing in the Office of the Secretary of State an affidavit to the effect that an original number plate for a vehicle is lost or destroyed, a duplicate number plate shall be furnished upon payment of a fee of $6 for each duplicate plate and a fee of $9 for a pair of duplicate plates.
Upon filing in the Office of the Secretary of State an affidavit to the effect that an original registration sticker or digital registration sticker for a vehicle is lost or destroyed, a new registration sticker or digital registration sticker shall be furnished upon payment of a fee of $20 for registration stickers or digital registration stickers.
The Secretary of State may, in his discretion, assign a new number plate or plates in lieu of a duplicate of the plate or plates so lost, stolen or destroyed, but such assignment of a new plate or plates shall not affect the right of the owner to secure a reassignment of his original registration number in the manner provided in this Act. The fee for one new number plate shall be $6, and for a pair of new number plates, $9.
For the administration of this Section, the Secretary shall consider the loss of a registration plate or digital registration plate or plates with properly affixed registration stickers or digital registration stickers as requiring the payment of:
(i) $26 for each duplicate issued; or
(ii) $29 for a pair of duplicate plates issued.
(b) Upon filing in the Office of the Secretary of State a police report and an affidavit to the effect that an original number plate for a vehicle is stolen, a new plate shall be issued with no fee.
Upon filing in the Office of the Secretary of State a police report and an affidavit to the effect that an original registration sticker or a digital registration sticker for a vehicle is stolen, a new registration sticker or digital registration sticker shall be issued with no fee.
The Secretary of State shall assign a new number plate or plates in lieu of a duplicate of the plate or plates that were stolen. The replacement fees set forth under subsection (a) shall not apply to plates or registration stickers that were stolen and indicated in a police report.
