All principals in the public schools, upon the written request of the parent, guardian, or other person having the care and control of any pupil attending any public school, shall permit any such pupil to leave the school grounds during intermissions. Any principal granting such a permit shall not be held liable for the action of the pupil during the intermissions and while the pupil remains outside of the school grounds.
