The education component of the school readiness program should be developmentally appropriate and based on research, involve the parent as the child's first teacher, serve as a preventive measure for children at risk of future school failure, and enhance the educational readiness of eligible children. The school readiness program should be of assistance to parents in preparing their at-risk children for educational success, including, as appropriate, health screening and referral.
