(a) Interim assessments offered by the department to local educational agencies, including those offered pursuant to Section 60642.6, are intended for the purposes of improving teaching and pupil learning. Results of the assessments may be used to provide timely feedback to teachers that they may use to continually adjust instruction to improve learning, for communication with pupils' parents or guardians, and for use by teachers in identifying professional development goals.
(b) Results from the interim assessments offered by the department, including those offered pursuant to Section 60642.6, shall not be used for any high-stakes purpose, including, but not limited to, teacher or other school staff evaluation, accountability, pupil grade promotion or retention, graduation, course or class placement, identification for gifted or talented education, reclassification of English learners, or identification as an individual with exceptional needs.
