(a) All laws of this state prescribing penalties for violations concerned with or affecting the state penitentiary or inmates thereof shall be equally applicable to the Division of Correction and shall be enforced accordingly.
(b) In the event any crime shall be committed in any institution of the division, it shall be the duty of the Director of the Division of Correction, or his or her designated employee, to report the crime to the county sheriff and prosecuting attorney of the county in which the institution is located in which the crime, or alleged crime, took place.
