Pennsylvania Statutes Title 53 P.S. Municipal and Quasi-Municipal Corporations § 57080. Duty to erect

The commissioners of the township shall erect posts at the intersection of all streets or highways, and at one of the angles where any street or highway crosses another street or highway, and shall firmly fix thereon boards or metal signs with index hands pointing to the direction of such street or highway, but if a tree, trolley pole, telephone pole, telegraph pole or building is so erected that it can be used in place of a post, and permission has been secured from the owner thereof, such tree, pole, or building may be used in place of a post. ?On such boards and signs shall be inscribed, in large and legible characters, the name of the town, village, or place to which such streets or highways lead, and the distance thereto computed in miles. ?Where any street intersects or crosses a State highway, application for a permit shall be made by the commissioners to the State Department of Highways ���1 for the erecting of such signs.
